My Local Top 3 (9/12/10-9/8/10)

Fall is sadly upon us and the hipster kids are exponentially growing in population. As we look ahead to this week, those hipster kids should be smiling because all three picks are indie rock studs. Indie rock is a real crapshoot live. A lot of these bands are getting so experimental in the studio that it is too difficult to translate live. Many others, however, put on a great bare-bones rock n' roll show that can't be beat. The proof is in the pudding though, don't take my word for it.

Monday 9/13
Wilbur Theatre, Boston, MA
Dirty Projectors
Owen Pallett

The Dirty Projectors really came alive last year with Bitte Orca. It was truly one of the most interesting studio releases I had listened to in a while. I haven't caught them live yet, but from what footage I've seen on the internet, they are pretty tight live as well. Dave Logstreth, the band's front man, is a very talented songwriter and one of today's most innovative guitarists.

Friday 9/17
House of Blues, Boston, MA
Broken Social Scene
The Sea and Cake

Two awesome bands that are great both live and in the studio. Broken Social Scene's latest album is as good as any they have released. I have always thought that they drew great similarity to Radiohead. That is a pretty trite thing to say at this point, but I think their creativity is groundbreaking in same sense of Radiohead's. The House of Blues is going to seem like a small venue to see this band in the not so distant future.

Saturday 9/18
Agganis Arena, Boston, MA
Pavement
Jenny Lewis

Pavement is one of the pioneer bands of indie rock. They somehow never saw the glory that the Smashing Pumpkins, Jane's Addiction, and other bands of the same genre saw in the early 90's, but 20 years later, they are regarded with an even greater importance. Stephen Malkmus is one of the greatest songwriters of modern rock and the band has influenced just about everyone. We've waited long enough for a reunion, so here's our chance.

M.I.A. Fall Tour

M.I.A. has seen nothing but controversy ever seen the success of "Paper Planes" came and passed. She has become notorious for ducking out on gigs and even retired at one point, but is back and hopefully willing to make up for her shaky couple of years. She will be making stops all across the US this fall, so dig up your neon gear and shutter shades because M.I.A. is no longer MIA.

My Local Top 3: 9/5/10-9/12/10

Wednesday 9/8
House of Blues Foundation Room, Boston, MA
The Barr Brothers

The Slip is one of the best bands to come out of the Boston area in the past chunk of time, unfortunately they have never been consistent in playing live or releasing studio material. Now Brad and Andrew Barr, two thirds of The Slip, are releasing an album of their own. These guys are unbelievable musicians and Brad happens to be a great songwriter. They have made a tremendous contribution to the local music scene in their time, so do yourself a favor and get out to support them.

Thursday 9/9
Harper's Ferry, Allston, MA
Heavy Pets

Heavy Pets are one of the hardest working jambands out there today. Unfortunately, being a jamband is harder than ever right now, with the comeback of Phish and the rise of electronica and dubstep. That doesn't, however, take away from their skilled musicianship and keen ear for improvisation. The Heavy Pets bring it live and are a gimmick-free, stone-cold rockers.

Saturday 9/10-Sunday 9/12
Blue Hills Canton, MA
Life is Good Festival (lineup found here)

There are rarely large festivals with good lineups in the greater Boston area, but the new Life is Good Festival is definitely worth checking out. First of all, any lineup with Dr. Dog is automatically a good lineup. With that out of the way, it is important to recognize big names like Ben Harper and Galactic, but also smaller acts that bring the heat like Trombone Shorty, Eli Paperboy Reed, and Toubab Krewe. If the weather is nice, Blue Hills will be the place to be this weekend.

My Local Top 3: 8/8/10-8/15/10

Jerry Week has ended, but summer music keeps on keepin' on in Boston. This week we have some good big shows going on and some even better ones happening behind the scenes. Before you go into panic mode about seeing an outdoor show before the end of the summer, take a look around and realize there are more than plenty of opportunities.

Wednesday 8/11
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA
Buckwheat Zydeco

First Drug Rug and now Buckwheat? The MFA is becoming one of Boston's best summer music venues and they're an art museum. If you wanna have a good ole' time on a Wednesday, check out this classic New Orleans feelgood collective. Zydeco is a genre foreign to many of us New Englanders, so you might even pick up a little culture too.

Thursday 8/12
Middle East Downstairs, Lizard Lounge
Club d'Elf

Club d'Elf is one of those bands that you have probably seen, but never really realized it. These guys don't seem to play regularly like they used to, so they stick to very modest venues. Their talent and grip on funky neo-jazz is bottomless, which is what makes all of their players in high demand for other gigs in the area. When they come together, however, nothing can match it.

Friday 8/13
Rock On Concert Cruises, Boston, MA
Rubblebucket
Tigercity

Rubblebucket is one of the most fun bands to see in New England. Not only do they have numerous highly skilled players led by trumpet player Alex Toth, but they make their performances interactive and spiritual. They are shooting quickly up the rankings and to be able to see them team up with Tigercity on a cruise in Boston Harbor is pretty much the coolest.

My Local Top 3: 8/1/10-8/7/10

You're going to have to wait for your good shows this week because it seems like the week will start to heat up towards the end (although I heard that Arcade Fire played a pretty mean show last night). The first week in August will bring straight Rawknroll to your soul with some tasty licks by some of today's best players.

Thursday 8/5
Middle East Downstairs, Cambridge, MA
Local Natives
We Barbarians

Right along side Dawes and Sleigh Bells are the Local Natives when mentioning the biggest breakout acts of 2010. The Natives back sweet CSNY harmonies with hard rock twang for a live show that has been received with great acclaim. Unfortunately, this show has been sold out for quite some time now, but if you are going, enjoy. If not, they will be returning to Boston at the Paradise in the fall.

Friday 8/6
Bank of America Pavilion, Boston, MA
Gov't Mule
Jackie Greene

One of the first show I ever went to was a Gov't Mule show and my interest has never waned. Mule's axe player Warren Haynes is one of the best and most versatile guitarist out there today, not to mention one of the friendliest and most charitable people in the jamband scene. On top of that, Jackie Greene continues to draw Dylan comparisons with his songsmith ways and easygoing feel. This will be a summer classic for sure!

Friday 8/6
Comcast Center, Mansfield, MA
John Mayer
Train

Lots of people hate on both these bands. I could personally give a rat's ass about Train, especially that song that keeps playing on commercials (although tell me you don't have a soft spot for "Drops of Jupiter" and I'll eat my hat). John Mayer, however, is too solid a talent to completely give up on. Despite his crappy pop tunes and mildly racist comments, the boy can play the geet as good as anyone out there today. If you go to this show, just hope for more "Who Did You Think I Was" and less "Who Says?"

Beatle Bob Celebrates 5000th Consecutive Concert

St. Louis' legendary "Beatle Bob" will celebrate his 5000th consecutive attended show on Tuesday, August 10th at the Duck Room at Blueberry Hillon in St. Louis. The show will feature some of Beatle Bob's local favorites such as The Trip Daddys, Hudson and the Hoo Doo Cats, Devil Baby Freakout!, DJ Sparkiss among others. For those unaware of Beatle Bob, he is simply a fan of music that has taken show-going to an insane level over the past decade and a half. He has attended a show every night since Christmas Eve 1996 and is now approaching his 5000th. Views are mixed on Beatle Bob. Many folks celebrate his Cal Ripken efforts and crack up over his ridiculous dance moves, but others think that his minor celebrity status should not give him the right to push his way to the front and disrupt the experience of surrounding fans. Whether you like him or not, however, you must admit that 5000 is a lot of consecutive shows and at this point in time, if you are seeing a show with Beatle Bob, you are seeing the best show in town. If you would like to learn more about this peculiar character check this out.

Congrats on 5000 Beatle Bob!

My Local Top 3: 7/25/10-7/31/10

Last week was filled with head-spinning electronica and "Un-Tiss" drum-n-bass madness. Hope you kiddies didn't have too much fun, we still got a hot n' heavy August to fit in our tummies! This week we're gettin real local, so if you've been lurking in the shade for the past couple months, stick you head out and come say hi to some Boston love. Soak in the red, white, and blue for one more week friends, 'cause the sun has almost set on July!

Wednesday 7/28
Calderwood Courtyard at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA
Drug Rug
Tune-Yards

I've had a personal obsession with Drug Rug since their break onto the scene a couple of years ago. The Commonwealth's loveliest dose of psychedelia will be playing their last show for a while this Wednesday at the MFA. They will be playing with their full lineup which is always a plus and openers Tune-Yards are sure to please with their zany freak-folk as well.

Thursday 7/29
House of Blues Front Room, Boston, MA
Mondo Gecko

Perhaps my favorite local jamband will be playing two sets for free this Thursday at the House of Blues front room. The Gecko is making big strides lately picking up a new Gordo-esque bass player and regulating the New England festival scene. Hop aboard the Gecko-train this week and I'm sure you will have a hard time getting off. Also please note I think it's wonderful what the HoB is doing with these free local shows on week nights. I don't always agree with the way they handle some things, but this was definitely a good move and a big help for local bands!

Saturday 7/31
Royale, Boston, MA
Seu Jorge and Almaz

You remember that cool movie called The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou? You remember that Brazilian dude that sang all the Bowie covers in Portuguese? Yeah, that dude's name is Seu Jorge and he does more than just Bowie covers! He'll be at Royale on Saturday night playing songs in a different language, so come on out and get cultured! TICKET GIVEAWAY! Be the first to comment on this post with your email and your favorite thing about The Concert Buzz and win 2 free tickets to this show!

Atmosphere Fall Tour

The Buzz doesn't feature a lot of hip-hop, but some artists are real eye-catchers, one of them being Atmosphere. Atmosphere goes the extra mile to make their live show an actual show, rather than just an MC standing on the stage with a microphone. Slug, the rapper of the duo, will be joined by a full band on stage throughout the tour. They don't look like your typical rap group, but they can definitely hang with the best of 'em lyrically.

My Local Top 3: 7/18/10-7/24/10

Last week was a terrific week for music in Boston. As the summer pushes on, we continue with another week chock full of new tuneage. Check out some shows this week, it's a good week to do it.

Wednesday 7/21 and Thursday 7/22
House of Blues, Boston, MA
Deadmau5

The flatbrimmed candy kids and the European house-lovers have rubbed off their love for drum and bass on the fratty college kids and too-cool high schoolers. Deadmau5, who is definitely a legit DJ if you are into that stuff, will be throwing two massive parties in Boston this week and will be drawing crowds from all over. Tickets are a little pricey, but if you're willing to throw down, bring your friend Molly- she'll love it.

Thursday 7/22
Royale, Boston, MA
Die Antwoord
Sleigh Bells

The hippest of the hipsters will come out in full force for this sold out show. Die Antwoord is a band that quite honestly freaks the hell out of me and I am yet to understand their appeal, but people are going batshit over them and considering it is their first North American tour, they are definitely worth checking out. Sleigh Bells has already proven that they can throw it down. Both these bands in a great new Boston venue is surely reason to catch a show on Thursday.

Thursday 7/22
The Enormous Room, Cambridge, MA
DJ sets by:
The Bodega Girls
Leisure
Gentleman Hall
The Wandas

All of the bands on this bill are solid. While they won't be playing live material, it should be a pretty sweet party with all of these folks spinning the wheels of steel. Upon that, it is sponsored by Supertonic, which is another site that I write for. Looks like Thurdsay night is the night to rage!

Perry's Pick: The Hundred in the Hands

Boy/ Girl pop duos have really taken off in the past few years. Off the top of my head there's Mates of State, Sleigh Bells, Matt & Kim, Phantogram, and that's just getting started. This latest one, called The Hundred in the Hands, is definitely a standout. The Brooklyn pairing of Jason Friedman and Eleanore Everdell combines the shoegaze hipstery of their counterparts with the tribal rhythms of Vampire Weekend and the Talking Heads. The first single I experienced was "Tom Tom," and while it's a simple groove, it is sure to make the stiffest hipster shake right out of his or her tightpants. The thing that will seal the deal for THITH (what the cool kids will be calling them) is that they have the underground following that will attract Sleigh Bells and Yeah Yeah Yeah's fans but a pop appeal that has potential to lure in fans that groove to La Roux or even Lady Gaga. Keep your ears peeled in discotheques for these cats and check out their debut EP "Desert" which is out now.

My Local Top 3

I'm adding a new segment to The Buzz called "My Local Top 3." For every upcoming week, I will highlight 3 local shows that tickle my fancy in hopes that you may go check them out. For those of you who don't know where local is, The Concert Buzz is Boston-based. Finally, for those of you who aren't local, check these bands out anyway and if you like what you hear, chances are they will make a stop in your neck of the woods. Without further ado, here is the first weekly top 3:

Tuesday 7/13
TT The Bear's Place, Cambridge, MA
Bear in Heaven
Twin Sister
Mountain Men

All 3 of these bands are getting great hype. I like what I'm hearing from Vermont's Mountain Men and Twin sister is about to really blow up. As for Bear in Heaven, they're another Brooklyn-grown project, so they definitely will not go unnoticed.

Saturday 7/17
Middle East Downstairs, Cambridge, MA
Heartless Bastards
The Builders and the Butchers
Cassavettes
Peter Wolf Crier

Just hopped on the Peter Wolf Crier boat and I'm glad I did. These guys are a less bluesy, more poppy Black Keys with a similar vintage sound. If you can't catch them this week, they'll return this fall with Rogue Wave and Midlake at Royale. Heartless Bastards are no slouch either.

Saturday and Sunday
Green River Music Festival, Greenfield, MA
Cake, Donna the Buffalo, Rubblebucket, Low Anthem, Calexico, and more

Green River Music Festival has expanded into a 2-day event, although don't plan on camping because there isn't any! Despite that inconvenience, they have pieced together a fine looking lineup of local and national talent which will make for a family-friendly mid-summer classic.

Dr. Dog Fall Dates

In my opinion Dr. Dog is the best rock band of the past 10 years. Just figured I should come out and say it. Seriously, if you haven't checked out this band yet, you are missing out on their masterfully crafted studio albums as well as their inspired live shows which still seem to be performed to minuscule crowds considering their talent. I guess a stubborn fan like myself should relish the fact that I get to see such an awesome band in such intimate settings, yet it is almost a crime that not enough people still know about them. TO ALL OUT THERE: if you like the Beatles, yes the Beatles, you will most likely enjoy Dr. Dog. Anyway, they will set off on a fall tour this October, after appearing at the Life is Good festival at Blue Hills in Massachusetts.

Disco Biscuits Late Summer Tour

Now that Phish has returned to the jamband scene, the Disco Biscuits have proven that they can stand the test of time as they continue to grow in popularity. The past couple of years have seen Bisco headline Red Rocks for two straight summers and their annual festival, Camp Bisco, continues to boom. While their latest studio release was met with poor reviews, they continue to sell tickets because of their unique electronic approach to jam-rock. Those who love Bisco, love Bisco, but those who hate Bisco, love to make it heard how much they hate Bisco. If you fall in with the former, the following tour dates may appeal to you.

Disco Biscuits Dates:
08/25/10 Wed Bottle & Cork Dewey Beach, DE
08/26/10 Thu Lincoln Theatre Raleigh, NC
08/27/10 Fri Blackwater Music Festival @ Spirit of Suwannee Live Oak, FL

Bands Boycott Arizona

Los Lobos were the first to do it and now there is a large slew of names adding themselves to the list of bands refusing to play shows in Arizona in response to the state's immigration bill. This group of bands are boycotting Arizona as part of the Sound Strike protest. Big names include My Morning Jacket, Nine Inch Nails, Ben Harper, Maroon 5, Gogol Bordello, Pitbull, and Steve Earle. For a complete list of Sound Strike artists, click here.
Now for the opinion section. Do you think this is the proper approach? I've never had too much issue with a connection between politics and music, as a matter of fact, it can really have an influence in many situations. In this situation, however, I think there are ways to impact the bill without shunning a whole state's worth of fans. The fans weren't the ones who passed this bill, the Governor was. Don't you think a better solution would be to organize a concert in Arizona to raise money for organizations fighting the immigration bill? That would ensure your audience would be against the bill and it would be doing something proactive rather than just talking about how bad the situation is. Just my 2 cents.

Here is a video of Rage Against the Machine's Zach De La Rocha explaining the protest:

Tuesday Tribute: Talking Heads

This Tuesday I get to look into the collection of one of my all-time favorites: The Talking Heads. It would be a severe understatement to classify this band as vastly ahead of their time. Whether picking up the electronic funk in bands like Passion Pit, the artsy weirdness in artists like Bjork, the global purcussion heard in the styles of Vampire Weekend, or the current collaborations with the Dirty Projectors, their influence has been undeniable and widespread throughout music's current state. I could give a brief history lesson on the band, but what I'd rather do is make a few points of conversation that pertain to the Heads. First off, I think that Tina Weymouth is one of the most underrated bass players of all time. David Byrne is seen as the face of the Talking Heads because he did the singing and songwriting, but Weymouth had very fast fingers and was extraordinary in formulating complicated bass lines to compliment Byrne's rhythm guitar (check out "Found a Job," "Cities," "Making Flippy Floppy," etc). She's also responsible for some of the more recognizable bass lines of the time ("Take Me to the River" comes to mind). Secondly, to me, the Talking Heads were a band of singles, not a band of albums. I know this is a stubborn way to look at it, but despite how big and influential the Heads are, they don't have an album that sticks out as one of the best of all time. On the other hand, they have singles that could occupy multiple best-of albums. This is not a bad thing, just interesting in that not many bands have seen popularity with such an approach. Lastly, no matter how much anybody wants them to, the Talking Heads will never reform. I may be a pessimist, but I just cannot see these guys getting back together. Byrne has had solo success, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz are married and have gone on to form Tom Tom Club, and their creative energies have all parted ways. This is both a blessing and a curse. It would be awesome to see them take the stage as a full band once again, but at the same time, they always strived to be hip, new, and cutting edge with their music- it would make no sense for a group of 50-somethings to begrudgingly reunite and play songs that were popular 25+ years ago. Regardless, their sound is timeless, their influence is endless, and they are clearly four of the funkiest white folks to ever come together.

First up is the frenzy of percussion known as "I Zimbra." This may be one of the hardest songs to sing along to, but it's a fair trade being one of the easiest tunes to dance to. Just follow David Byrne's lead!

The Local Natives are one of the hottest bands on the rise right now. Let's see how they do with "Warning Sign."

It's clear to see the creative influence that RISD had on the Talking Heads. This influence was seen not only in their music, but in their costumes, their stage antics, and their music videos. Check out this classic video for "Burning Down the House."

"Cities" is a great example of the Talking Heads combining artistic zaniness with pure upbeat dance grooves. Tina absolutely cooks on this one, but it's really taken to a new level with the guests on percussion. And no, even though they do a great cover, it is not a Phish song.

This last video is one of my current favorites. The children at PS22 in New York do a terrific rendition of "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)." I wish music classes were like this when I was in elementary school. I don't know who this teacher is, but he deserves some kind of award not only for conjuring up such a spectacular arrangement, but for exposing these kids to such awesome tunes. If you ignore the cheesy hand motions, this version is nothing short of beautiful.

Perry's Pick: Mystery Roar

This whole electronic scene is really getting bigger than I ever imagined. It has transgressed its way into just about all of the popular genres from pop to indie to jambands. Whether you like it or not, we are certainly in the heat of a trend, but as with any type of music, it is fun to watch different bands grow, evolve, and come onto the scene. Boston seems to be one of the hotbeds for indie-electro music and one of the bands leading the charge is Mystery Roar. With a style that sounds as though it emanated from a single laptop, but a live set up similar to any other rock band, Mystery Roar brings an energy that is both funky and frenetic. Shunning any "disco is dead" mentality, these Boston boys bring a bass-heavy groove with a keyboard savvy that benefits the vocals as well the overall sound. Unlike favorites such as MGMT and Passion Pit, Mystery Roar takes a more techno approach, stacking several layers above a simple beat to create a style more comparable to Daft Punk or LCD Soundsystem. Similar to Passion Pit, however, Mystery Roar is tackling the nation's biggest college city, and come next fall, they will be the band that all of the cool kids are listening to. Sleigh Bells and the Bodega Girls may have the sweaty, drum n bass, girl-power danceoff thing working, but Mystery Roar is their male counterpart. It may not sound appealing, but it won't be long until you know what I mean.

Become a Legend: Design the Concert Buzz Logo

It's been almost a year since the birth of The Concert Buzz, and while posts have decreased a bit(I know, I'm sorry), I hope to once again ramp it up, and with that, I need some style brotha! I have decided to launch the first Concert Buzz Contest! The rules are as follows:

Task: Design me a totally balls logo to put at the top of my blog! This logo should include the title, but otherwise it is up to you and where your creative juices decide to take you (but keep the juices to yourself please, thanks). Submissions can be made from your computer using Paint, KidPix, etc. or just done by hand and scanned to your computer. All submissions should be sent to peaton@bu.edu for consideration!

Prizes: Winner gets any and all of the following:
-A ticket to Phish at Hersheypark Stadium on 6/13
-A ticket to Phish at the Comcast Theatre on 6/18
-A Concert Buzz mix CD (numbered 1/1)
-A firm handshake and a look in the eye!

Deadline: If you want the good prizes, you'll probably want to get your submission in before their particular date (not to say that the other prizes aren't good). If you want to submit something just for the pride of seeing your artwork grace the world's most kickass music blog, then you receive an indefinite extension.

Get into artsy-mode and create me the most breathtaking masterpiece that the blogoshpere has ever witnessed. I give you my 2 cents, now I want your 10 in return.

Good Luck!

Help The Dead Trees Out!

I saw the Dead Trees again the other night (they played with Adam Green, you can read my review of the show here). I swear, every show of theirs I go to, they seem to get noticably tighter and more energetic. What particularly struck me this time around was their new material. Having been a follower of this band since their infancy, it has been great to hear them develop their sound, but the material on their upcoming record really takes it to another level. I'm really excited to hear how these tunes will develop in a a studio setting, especially with a talented producer like Noah Georgeson (The Strokes, The Whigs, Adam Green) manning the boards.

There's just one problem, though: This record cannot be made without the help of the fans. These guys have given us rad music for years now and it's time we lend our support. In order to fund their new album, they have set up a Kickstarter fund, complete with some very tasty incentives for donations. These incentives include everything from advance digital downloads, to personal thank-yous in the liner notes, to skype instrument lessons, to guest list spots for life! They are really going out of their way to meet you half-way on this one, and from somebody who has heard this new material develop in a live setting, the album is going to be unreal.

So do yourslef a favor as a fan, and them a favor as a band and head over to their kickstarter page to help them record their new album.

Tuesday Tribute: Europe '72

The Grateful Dead weren't just a live band, but a live experience, and few years (if any) were better for this great American band than 1972. The year is most famous for the live album Europe '72 which was a compilation of the band's best tunes from their Western European tour of that year. 1972 was also the introduction of Keith Godchaux into the band. Some see this as a blessing and a curse because Keith was a hell of an addition, but he entered as a package deal with his wife Donna, who few express a genuine liking for. In 1972, Bill Kreutzman was the lone soldier behind the drum kit, which made for a different sounding Dead, but one that many fans would argue was tighter and almost funky at times. Sadly, 1972 was the final touring year for Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, who passed in 1973, but not before lending his unique talent and humor to an outstanding year for a legendary band. This Tuesday, we will explore some of the Dead's live recordings from 1972.

First up is a live staple for the band- one which the usually segue into "I Know You Rider." "China Cat Sunflower" features one of the more creative lead/rhythm guitar combinations of any song out there and it makes for a really interesting jam.

Up next is a cover of "How Sweet It Is" from New York City in March of '72. Jerry used to do this one a lot with the Jerry Garcia Band, but it was more of a rarity with the Dead. Donna Jean actually sounds pretty decent on the backups in this one too.

In my humble opinion, the Grateful Dead's finest grasp of Americana is in their poignant ballad "Jack Straw." One of my favorite Dead tunes, this one comes from an unreleased movie called Sunshine Daydream, which documents the band's Veneta, Oregon show on August 27, 1972.

Lastly, here's a take of "He's Gone" from an April 1972 show in Copenhagen, Denmark. Not long after this show, the tune would take on a whole new meaning with the passing of Pigpen. Just remember what Jerry says: "Nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile."

Bowery Presents, the same entertainment group that brought New York such venues as the Bowery Ballroom, the Mercury Lounge, and the Music Hall of Williamsburg, is now teaming up with Boston's new Royale on Tremont Street to book many of the same acts that pass through New York. This is terrific news for the Boston music scene, which can now add one more club that books up and coming bands in an intimate atmosphere. The first Bowery Presents show will be April 22nd and will feature Karl Denson's Tiny Universe. Other acts that are already booked include Broken Bells, Deerhunter, and CocoRosie. Phish Breaks Up Again/ DMB Fans Take Over The World

Popular Vermont rock quartet Phish have once again called it quits. The band had just sold a great portion of tickets for their summer tour when they decided they did not want to continue any more. Bassist Mike Gordon has decided to become a clothing designer specializing in neon and pastel colored tank-tops and tight pants as well as top hats and hi-top sneakers. Keyboardist Page McConnell will continue to live his life as the nicest looking musician in the music business. Seriously, don't you really want to just like, have lunch with Page or something, I feel like we'd really get along. Anyway, Trey Anastasio will become a motivational speaker for Gingers nationwide who feel disadvantaged due to their hair color. This will probably be a failure seeing as how the moment he tries to make a speech, somebody in the crowd will surely yell "Rebaaaaa!" Jon Fishman...... well Jon Fishman hasn't thought that far in advance yet because he's kind of baked. Now that Phish will be breaking up, the US government will be scrambling to find employment for all of the Phishheads who will finally try to get jobs.
In similar news, Dave Matthews band fans who have caught wind of the Phish news have begun recruitment initiatives to increase in both multitude and power. The goals of this coup of Dave-bro's have made their motives clear:
1. You must always talk louder than the band that is playing and make it impossible for anyone else on the lawn to hear music.
2. If you are underage, you must walk around with a 30-rack of Natty-Ice over your shoulder to show that you are underage but still drinking, because it's cool.
3. A dresscode of backwards Polo hats, offensively bright Vineyard Vines shorts, Lax jerseys, and boat shoes will be required of all Dave fans.
4. You must make people think that the Dave Matthews Band sucks just because their fans suck, which sucks.

Jounce Spring Tour

Northeast funkateers Jounce are hitting the road this spring in support of their new EP. Jounce consists of four childhood friends who formed the band while attending Hampshire College in Western Massachusetts. You may recognize the bass player, Danny Tamberelli as the friendly redhead who played "Little Pete" on the Nickalodeon show "The Adventures of Pete and Pete." Here are 3 thoughts that relate to this news:

1. "The Adventures of Pete and Pete" is the greatest kids show to ever air on television. It is a hidden gem that only gets better with age like a fine wine. I watch it all the time now (on DVD and YouTube) and it is funnier than I ever remembered it. It also featured many cameos from famous musicians like Iggy Pop, Michael Stipe, LL Cool J, and Luscious Jackson.

2. The soundtrack to the show is absolutely phenomenal. Mark Mulcahy and his Miracle Legion cohorts formed a band called Polaris to record the soundtrack. I've raved about it before on The Buzz and I'll do it again. The soundtrack is terrific simple chord power pop that reeks of 90's indie and has influenced everyone from Jounce to Thom Yorke of Radiohead.

3. With Tamberelli's past aside (I'm sure he's tried to shake it), Jounce can really bring the heat. Their last album, These Things featured heavy hitters like Marco Benevento and Tom Hamilton as guests. These guys have been tearing up the east coast for years now and are sure to be a national name in the near future.

Jounce 2010 Spring Dates:

April 2 Asbury Park, NJ—The Saint, (w/ Briar Patch)

Newport Folk Festival Initial Lineup

Returning to Newport's Fort Adams State Park for its 51st year, the 2010 Newport Folk Festival boasts yet another impressive and diverse lineup. Leading the way this year's festival, which will take place July 30th-August 1st, are The Band's Levon Helm and his Ramble on the Road Band, Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket, and the increasingly popular Avett Brothers.
The Newport Folk Festival is a festival experience like no other. You can't go there expecting to find an intense lot scene or a huge party, but instead it is a really laid back atmosphere. With a mix between dedicated music-buffs and the luxurious Newport folks, the crowd is a mix of all ages and interests, but rarely is there a clash in personalities. When the weather is nice, there are fewer places better to see a concert than Fort Adams State Park, which is surrounded by ocean and provides a pleasant glimpse of the Newport Bridge in the distance. All in all, a very cool experience which has prided itself on past acts which include everyone from the Allman Brothers and Trey Anastasio to Bob Dylan and Joan Baez.

New Pornographers World Tour

Canada's New Pornographers are hitting the road this summer in support of their upcoming album Together. After a string of successful albums, 2005's Twin Cinema being my personal favorite, Together is perhaps the band's most anticipated release and the band will be playing in much larger venues this summer as a result. Supporting the New Pornographers on their tour will be a handful of bands including The Mountain Goats, Here We Go Magic, The Dodos, The Dutchess & The Duke, and Imaad Wasif. The New Pornographers are one of the best bands of the past decade and really helped to spearhead the indie trends of the past number of years. What makes them even more special is that they truly are a good live band as well. Do yourself a favor and get out to see these guys this summer and while you're at it, pick up Together, which hits stores on May 4th.

Gathering of the Vibes 2010 Lineup

The lineup to this summer's Gathering of the Vibes festival in Bridgeport, CT was just announced. Headlining this year's festival, which will take place July 29th-August 1st, are Damien Marley and Nas, Primus, and recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Jimmy Cliff. These names are quite different from what Vibes fans have been used to in the past. The festival usually centers itself around at least 1 Dead-related band, but additions are still to come, so we'll see what the final lineup will look like.
On a different note, lets hope that the festival organizers have taken strides to make a safer environment at Vibes this year. Last year, a man was killed and his body was dumped right in the middle of the camping area. Many blame the infamous "Nitrous Mafia" for this incident, but whether nitrous was involved or not, it is still a scary thought. Vibes has been a successful event for years now and lets hope that 2010 will let them get back on their feet.

2010 Lineup:
Damien Marley & Nas
Primus
Jimmy Cliff
Rhythm Devils featuring Keller Williams
Umphrey's Mcgee

Guest Writer Keith Eaton Shares 2 Cents on the Grateful Dead and Their Latest Reincarnation

I am pleased to feature a perspective piece by my relative and friend, Keith Eaton. Keith (pictured above) is a longtime Deadhead and a longtime music fan whose tour stories and shows attended are seemingly endless. The following piece tells Keith's story of revisiting Cornell this past February to see Furthur play Barton Hall. The show proved to be the beginning of a new chapter in his Dead-fan career as well as a trip into the past to revisit old friends, old sights, and the music which he has cherished since the very first note. I hope this is the first of many entries we'll read from Keith, enjoy!

Driving west on I-90 in my 15 year old Saturn, tossed by blowy snow squalls, my thoughts paused as I passed Albany. It was nearly 20 years since I had stood outside (“shut out”) listening to the radio broadcast of what would become Dozin’ at the Knick. Luckily, I’d scored tickets for the subsequent two nights, but already I digress.

After a brief, near car-breakdown panic, 15 miles east of Herkimer, I buzzed along toward Syracuse wondering if I was doing the right thing. At my age, should I be logging thousands of miles on my car to catch a couple of my long-time Grateful Dead heroes? The angst was easily justified by the fact that I would be meeting college friends who, themselves, were trekking to Ithaca from Ohio and Oregon. Besides, as a teacher on February break, what else should I be doing?

In my career as a Deadhead, I’ve had spells where I thought I was “over it,” that road trips should be saved for the educational or spiritual variety, visiting family, old friends, National Parks and such. 1991 was just such a dry spell (only 2 shows) when I leaned into the grindstone of rigorous work and ventured only to alternative and post-punk shows local to my then geographic vicinity. It didn’t last.

The last two years of the Grateful Dead’s career, I was fortunate enough to be living in the Northwest. Bay Area, Sacramento, Eugene and Seattle shows were all within my purview. (Maybe mileage out west doesn’t count as much.) After Garcia died, I caught a Further Fest and a Ratdog show in 1996. Then came a dry-spell which lasted for 5 years until an intelligent friend of mine (whose flight from Oregon to Syracuse would soon be landing) urged me to see Phil and Friends. It was the lovingly-named “Q,” and I was back “on the bus.”

“On the bus” in 2001 and beyond was something quite different from what I had remembered from my heyday–mid-80s to 1990. But then again, I always cherished (and bemoaned) how the scene was always changing. Gone were the days of camping out at the Hampton Coliseum or any other venue, deep Shakedown scenes, but the Warlocks ushered in a newer era. After Brent Mydland passed away, would it ever be the same? There were many moments that exceeded this late-career Head’s expectations. Besides, Heads from earlier phases were always bemoaning the changes, but they were still coming back!

Once again, I, too, was coming back into the fray, back into that transient community I call home. Banking left around Syracuse, downshifting south onto I-81, I nursed a stomach flutter of expectation. I hadn’t felt it in quite some time, a pre-show jitters of anything-can-happen. Perhaps it was because I had fulfilled my National Parks quotient, cruising along the Erie Canal corridor, a piece of history to which I was oblivious when touring in ’90. Perhaps it was because I was reuniting with dear friends who have crossed the line into family after all these years. Perhaps it was because I was going to see a band who would erase the disappointments of “the Dead” of 2004. Who knows, but heading to Ithaca on state road 13, I was positively giddy.

I was giddy not just because I was going to see the Dead in mid-state New York, an area that seemed to collect shows in the 70s and 80s like sticky paper collects flies in a barn. I was giddy not just because I was tootling along on a country road past towns not unlike those where I live in rural Maine, full of folks trimming the evening lamps unsuspecting of what was magnetizing their homeland. I was giddy not just because I had listened to the Furthur shows from the New Year’s run and the open rehearsals of January. I was giddy because I was going to see Phil Lesh and Bob Weir play, accompanied by an accomplished staff of erstwhile Heads, in the hallowed track and field house BARTON HALL.

OK, I do recall a night circa 1989, when I’d argued with Matt (who would soon be arriving from Ohio) and Al in their D.C. apartment about the ULTIMATE “Morning Dew.” For them, it was 5-8-77. There was no other. Myself, I had a spot for raunchy 80s sounds, and my Dew of choice was 10-12-84. I’d argued this point, but to no avail. Besides, their Dew was on a crispy, yet warm, Betty Board, while my Dew was on a hissy, Oade audience. Now older, I understand their point, and I can laugh and shrug at my 22 year-old obsession to always root for the underdog.

5-8-77 is an undeniable masterpiece. It is a brief show–the second set clocks in well under 90 minutes–but it is more than a meal. Think of the ecstasy of a well-balanced sashimi versus gorging out on a crock of yummy curry. For my tastes, I guess it depends on the day. Yet that show from Cornell’s Barton Hall in ’77, like it or not, is burned into the grooves of my consciousness deeper (I risk admitting) than the cherished vinyl ones of “Double Nickels on the Dime” or “Sticky Fingers,” even. For me, that’s saying a lot.

Deep into the Quicki-Mart Generica of Ithaca’s periphery, I found my hotel with ease. It was a feeling difficult to describe, that ease. It was a feeling from the days when we used to say, “See you in Phili”; “See you in Louisville”; “See you in Alpine”; a day without cell phones when we knew our reuniting was inevitable, though there be 40,000 other Heads milling around. In the luxuriant hotel room, Matt already had his feet up and had read all the Ithaca papers had to offer in anticipation of this “historic” show.

To be fair, the Grateful Dead played Barton Hall again in 1980 and 1981. Plus, they had all those great Binghamton, Utica and other New York state shows, not to mention The City. Nonetheless, this was a pilgrimage, and here I was, a pilgrim. It felt good. It felt like Old Home Day or the 4th, some time when everyone you know or care about just drops what they’re doing and fires up the bar-b-que. We met Cori, who’d flown in to Syracuse from Oregon via JFK–a typical tour miracle considering that Maryland and Pennsylvania were being pummeled with more snow than they’d seen since Ben Franklin’s day–and did the only logical thing we could do: found Indian food in downtown Ithaca.

The next day continued the scenic wonder quotient as we visited Taughannock Falls. It was an impressive icy broth that made me wonder about how amazing the Columbia Gorge would look when frozen. It was an ambling day, a pre-show day, a day to stretch and wonder at where we were. I was glad we’d all arrived a day early to rest.

Eating sushi before the show, I realized/remembered it was Valentine’s Day. No wonder the couple seated beside us, right beside us, was a little miffed and/or mystified by our tie-dyed tour stories. Maybe my patchouli was interfering with the Rosé’s bouquet, but hey, we’re in town. The campus had been empty of Heads during our pre-show orientation. Only the band’s busses gave away Barton Hall’s location. We squinted, nosed our way through side streets, until we finally found the parking garage designated for the tribe. One converted school bus, which we’d seen earlier, had somehow earned favored nation status and been allowed to park near the sidewalk. BUT THERE WAS NO SHAKEDOWN, no hacky-sack hanging fools, nothing. Cornell University did not want a scene.

After dinner, parking in the garage, we made our way into Barton. The entrance exuded that paint over paint look of a well-worn facility. Up the stairs into the main hall, the gummy floor testified its role as a track and field house, while the ROTC posters told the rest. What a hoot to lope up wooden bleachers built in 1914. Harvard-Yale game? High school dance? No, we’re at a Dead show! Matt and I couldn’t bear to sit in the back, and we found our place adjacent to the soundboard. There was plenty of room.

My pre-show anticipation had simply melted into marveling at the hall. The rafters and raised roof spine with windows brought to mind a rural Maine chicken barn, alas Bobby’s famed “Playin’ in the Barn” on 5-07-80. The stained glass “Cornell University” behind reminded us where we were. The curtains cordoning off the wings and space behind the stage had me worried about sound vacuums. But what did I care, we were there.

After Matt scoped out the surrounding area, he stopped in to chat (I was content with our zone). Pondering odd openers, I mentioned how in the 80s only “Walking the Dog,” “Road Runner” or “Midnight Hour” had seemed like odd openers. I think Matt mentioned “Dancin’,” and then the lights dropped. The venue didn’t even seem anywhere near capacity as the band vaulted to the stage. The “Midnight Hour” brought me chills and a smile.

After that moment, Phil, Bobby, John Kadlecik and crew brought wave after wave of smiles. Though it would have been nice to see Bill Kreutzman and Mickey Hart up there, I was rooting for Joe Russo and Jay Lane. Is that the underdog in me? Jeff Chimenti? Well, I’d seen him with the Dead and Ratdog and already had full confidence in his mastery. In the wings, Zoe Ellis and Sunshine Garcia Becker brought to mind great Jerry Garcia Band shows of yore. Their names hinted at some deep Bay Area pedigree that I wasn’t even going to consider. Just let them sing!

Next up, “They Love Each Other,” oh yeah, it’s Valentine’s Day. I kept forgetting, as if it mattered, but this was my Valentine, from my heroes to me, and it mattered. Kadlecik has the touch, and it shines on Jerry’s bouncy ballads. What I remember next (I’m deliberately writing this without a set list on hand), was an on stage “huddle” as we used to call it, the likes of which I hadn’t seen since . . . Had I ever seen one like that? Much discussion, laughter, Phil gesturing with his hands, I turned to Matt and said, “They’re arguing over how many beats for the beginning of ‘Beat It on Down the Line.’” Indeed it was, and was I boogying or what? Bouncy music: the elastic rubber band that stretches and snaps back as I remembered from days gone by. Fun, fun, fun.

Phil tried his hand at “Peggy-O,” which, to my ears, was a bit disjointed. No matter, we’re all having fun. Then, Weir pulls out a “Looks Like Rain” which makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up: pure animism. Lesh and Kadlecik plow deep furrows as Weir shouts, “Can’t stand the rain!” and I’m in Dead Head heaven: crescendo after crescendo morphing into the deep molasses of abdominal emotion. Did I ever see one like this before? My memory banks latch on 7-07-81 from K.C., but that’s a full year before I saw the Grateful Dead! Fantastic.

From there, we shift gears down into the cool blues of Garcia-land, “Sugaree.” Kadlecik does the song the justice it deserves, spiraling peaks that morph into road house blues. Somehow, the song both connects to the barroom brawl and transcends that environment, up and down simultaneously. Weir’s set closing “Good Lovin’” would be a footnote except for the fact that it was a twisted and elegant reading. First, there was the Pig Pen-era introduction propelled by Lesh’s lines, then the late-70s and 80s Weirisms, then the tune. Toward the end, they slipped into a jam that played Weir and Pig Pen versions off each other into something like I’ve never heard before. Oh yeah. Set break.

Stunned, Matt and I stood in silence for a while. He was employing the masterful technology of pen to paper for the set list, something akin these days to illuminated manuscripts as everyone around us was already ON THE PHONE. Looking at the list, we said, “Doh, Valentine’s Day!” How many GD love or love forlorn songs can you fit into one first set? All in all, brilliant, except for the quest for water. We had danced, and I mean danced, and rather than a fountain to quench our thirst, we had Cornell students filling 4 ounce Dixie cups from insulated water coolers on the sidelines. Works for a track meet, but not for thirsty Heads. It’s another testament to how Ivory Towers don’t touch their feet to solid ground. Well, whatever. It felt like a goofy cotillion or something, on rubber mats.

To be honest, the “Looks Like Rain” had already scratched my yen, and anything thereafter was gravy. Cori and Jamie stashed their coats by our rail in front of the tapers, and we waited for the second set, nursing our little cups of water like they were Veuve Cliquot. Scanning the crowd, I saw hair much grayer than mine, if not white, sprinkled in among the young. One scene in particular stands out: a man in his late-50s, scoping the faces around and alternately paying attention to the teen who looked mightily like him. The torch was being passed.

The lights dropped, smoke filled the ardently non-smoking Barton Hall, and the band slipped into a smooth, warm, heart-felt “Uncle John’s Band.” It was as if light was beaming from each heart in the hall. Gooey and warm at the end, Ryan Adams popped up. “Peaceful Valley.” I dig this guy’s songs, big time, and Phil is absorbing them as his own. “Ashes and Glass” had me and Matt high fiving for a “Throwing Stones,” only to scratch our heads when it turned another way. However, we weren’t disappointed. Weir’s Ratdog regular transcended itself, morphing into many jams that hinted at many Weirisms, almost naturally twisted.

Then, a song that made folks weep in 1995, with an execution that would have made said crowd pass out, Phil delivered an impeccable “Unbroken Chain.” I could sell my house and quit my job if I would be guaranteed to hear Phil sing this every night. Lord, ain’t it somethin’? Flawless: full of Lane’s accents and Russo’s backbone, Ellis and Becker’s soothing croon, Chimenti’s jazz inflections, the three guitar men took us home. Nailed it, they did. No, it wasn’t a Warren Haynes shred-fest, rather, a well-placed accent on the right note. And as the jam faded like a feather falling in quiet night, “Morning Dew.”

As mentioned earlier, if ever there was a song associated with 5-08-77, it’s “Dew.” I’m not sure if anyone around me was moving or swaying or dancing, because I was staring at the stage with the intensity of a research biologist searching for a cherished amoeba through a microscope. All thought and attention was channeled forward. While we can never revisit a time we knew or didn’t know, Kadlecik was with us, beaming, his moment to nod an homage to the core energy that has driven this bus this far. He knew. We knew. The “Dew” shined, and there was a palpable, melt-appreciation for each lick which he masterfully executed. In an additional nod to the master Sensei, Garcia, the “Dew” flowed through all requisite channels, and was not overdone. It was poignant and confined, though not terse. The Lesh and Weir foundation was at its finest, and we were home.

“The Other One” out of “Morning Dew”? Now all bets are off, and the rest of the night is jam/smile city. Sure, it wasn’t a 1971 barn-burner, but guess what folks, it’s 2010! This was a band firing on all cylinders like I would never have imagined. The Other Ones, Phil and Friends, Ratdog, the Dead, this is the real deal. It can’t be measured, but it’s palpable. The “China-> Standing-> Rider” almost seems like an afterthought to me, though had it been 1990, that would have been EPIC. A “Samson” encore was the icing on the cake, sealing the weekend deal with a nod to ritual, and one last jam through which we could sweat out our sins.

Walking into a parking garage is not my ideal form of exiting a show of this calibre. However, that was the scene. I longed for the days when I could float from the show to float through the soft Oaxacan blanket scene of a mellow Shakedown when we knew we’d be there for days. Nope. 21st century, parking garage, suddenly transported back to the hotel with Matt’s expert driving, barely a sound. What to say? Before cashing in, we hug our good-byes to Cori, send her back to Oregon with good spirits, the east is not yet lost.

The next morning, it’s gray Ithaca again, the trashy edges somewhat softened from the hope we danced. We’d come many years and miles to this moment, and we, the community, pulled it off once again. After some early morning eggs and sausage, rye toast and coffee, Matt gave me that knowing look: it’s time to go. We piled into our cars, and headed south to Lehigh.

Furthur just wrapped up their winter tour by celebrating Phil Lesh's 70th birthday at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. If you missed them this winter, don't fret, they just announced a summer tour which includes their own festival at Mountain Aire in California over Memorial Day weekend. To find out more about Furthur's summer tour, head over to their website.
