Beatle Bob Celebrates 5000th Consecutive Concert

St. Louis' legendary "Beatle Bob" will celebrate his 5000th consecutive attended show on Tuesday, August 10th at the Duck Room at Blueberry Hillon in St. Louis. The show will feature some of Beatle Bob's local favorites such as The Trip Daddys, Hudson and the Hoo Doo Cats, Devil Baby Freakout!, DJ Sparkiss among others. For those unaware of Beatle Bob, he is simply a fan of music that has taken show-going to an insane level over the past decade and a half. He has attended a show every night since Christmas Eve 1996 and is now approaching his 5000th. Views are mixed on Beatle Bob. Many folks celebrate his Cal Ripken efforts and crack up over his ridiculous dance moves, but others think that his minor celebrity status should not give him the right to push his way to the front and disrupt the experience of surrounding fans. Whether you like him or not, however, you must admit that 5000 is a lot of consecutive shows and at this point in time, if you are seeing a show with Beatle Bob, you are seeing the best show in town. If you would like to learn more about this peculiar character check this out.

Congrats on 5000 Beatle Bob!

My Local Top 3: 7/25/10-7/31/10

Last week was filled with head-spinning electronica and "Un-Tiss" drum-n-bass madness. Hope you kiddies didn't have too much fun, we still got a hot n' heavy August to fit in our tummies! This week we're gettin real local, so if you've been lurking in the shade for the past couple months, stick you head out and come say hi to some Boston love. Soak in the red, white, and blue for one more week friends, 'cause the sun has almost set on July!

Wednesday 7/28
Calderwood Courtyard at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA
Drug Rug
Tune-Yards

I've had a personal obsession with Drug Rug since their break onto the scene a couple of years ago. The Commonwealth's loveliest dose of psychedelia will be playing their last show for a while this Wednesday at the MFA. They will be playing with their full lineup which is always a plus and openers Tune-Yards are sure to please with their zany freak-folk as well.

Thursday 7/29
House of Blues Front Room, Boston, MA
Mondo Gecko

Perhaps my favorite local jamband will be playing two sets for free this Thursday at the House of Blues front room. The Gecko is making big strides lately picking up a new Gordo-esque bass player and regulating the New England festival scene. Hop aboard the Gecko-train this week and I'm sure you will have a hard time getting off. Also please note I think it's wonderful what the HoB is doing with these free local shows on week nights. I don't always agree with the way they handle some things, but this was definitely a good move and a big help for local bands!

Saturday 7/31
Royale, Boston, MA
Seu Jorge and Almaz

You remember that cool movie called The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou? You remember that Brazilian dude that sang all the Bowie covers in Portuguese? Yeah, that dude's name is Seu Jorge and he does more than just Bowie covers! He'll be at Royale on Saturday night playing songs in a different language, so come on out and get cultured! TICKET GIVEAWAY! Be the first to comment on this post with your email and your favorite thing about The Concert Buzz and win 2 free tickets to this show!

Atmosphere Fall Tour

The Buzz doesn't feature a lot of hip-hop, but some artists are real eye-catchers, one of them being Atmosphere. Atmosphere goes the extra mile to make their live show an actual show, rather than just an MC standing on the stage with a microphone. Slug, the rapper of the duo, will be joined by a full band on stage throughout the tour. They don't look like your typical rap group, but they can definitely hang with the best of 'em lyrically.

My Local Top 3: 7/18/10-7/24/10

Last week was a terrific week for music in Boston. As the summer pushes on, we continue with another week chock full of new tuneage. Check out some shows this week, it's a good week to do it.

Wednesday 7/21 and Thursday 7/22
House of Blues, Boston, MA
Deadmau5

The flatbrimmed candy kids and the European house-lovers have rubbed off their love for drum and bass on the fratty college kids and too-cool high schoolers. Deadmau5, who is definitely a legit DJ if you are into that stuff, will be throwing two massive parties in Boston this week and will be drawing crowds from all over. Tickets are a little pricey, but if you're willing to throw down, bring your friend Molly- she'll love it.

Thursday 7/22
Royale, Boston, MA
Die Antwoord
Sleigh Bells

The hippest of the hipsters will come out in full force for this sold out show. Die Antwoord is a band that quite honestly freaks the hell out of me and I am yet to understand their appeal, but people are going batshit over them and considering it is their first North American tour, they are definitely worth checking out. Sleigh Bells has already proven that they can throw it down. Both these bands in a great new Boston venue is surely reason to catch a show on Thursday.

Thursday 7/22
The Enormous Room, Cambridge, MA
DJ sets by:
The Bodega Girls
Leisure
Gentleman Hall
The Wandas

All of the bands on this bill are solid. While they won't be playing live material, it should be a pretty sweet party with all of these folks spinning the wheels of steel. Upon that, it is sponsored by Supertonic, which is another site that I write for. Looks like Thurdsay night is the night to rage!

Perry's Pick: The Hundred in the Hands

Boy/ Girl pop duos have really taken off in the past few years. Off the top of my head there's Mates of State, Sleigh Bells, Matt & Kim, Phantogram, and that's just getting started. This latest one, called The Hundred in the Hands, is definitely a standout. The Brooklyn pairing of Jason Friedman and Eleanore Everdell combines the shoegaze hipstery of their counterparts with the tribal rhythms of Vampire Weekend and the Talking Heads. The first single I experienced was "Tom Tom," and while it's a simple groove, it is sure to make the stiffest hipster shake right out of his or her tightpants. The thing that will seal the deal for THITH (what the cool kids will be calling them) is that they have the underground following that will attract Sleigh Bells and Yeah Yeah Yeah's fans but a pop appeal that has potential to lure in fans that groove to La Roux or even Lady Gaga. Keep your ears peeled in discotheques for these cats and check out their debut EP "Desert" which is out now.

My Local Top 3

I'm adding a new segment to The Buzz called "My Local Top 3." For every upcoming week, I will highlight 3 local shows that tickle my fancy in hopes that you may go check them out. For those of you who don't know where local is, The Concert Buzz is Boston-based. Finally, for those of you who aren't local, check these bands out anyway and if you like what you hear, chances are they will make a stop in your neck of the woods. Without further ado, here is the first weekly top 3:

Tuesday 7/13
TT The Bear's Place, Cambridge, MA
Bear in Heaven
Twin Sister
Mountain Men

All 3 of these bands are getting great hype. I like what I'm hearing from Vermont's Mountain Men and Twin sister is about to really blow up. As for Bear in Heaven, they're another Brooklyn-grown project, so they definitely will not go unnoticed.

Saturday 7/17
Middle East Downstairs, Cambridge, MA
Heartless Bastards
The Builders and the Butchers
Cassavettes
Peter Wolf Crier

Just hopped on the Peter Wolf Crier boat and I'm glad I did. These guys are a less bluesy, more poppy Black Keys with a similar vintage sound. If you can't catch them this week, they'll return this fall with Rogue Wave and Midlake at Royale. Heartless Bastards are no slouch either.

Saturday and Sunday
Green River Music Festival, Greenfield, MA
Cake, Donna the Buffalo, Rubblebucket, Low Anthem, Calexico, and more

Green River Music Festival has expanded into a 2-day event, although don't plan on camping because there isn't any! Despite that inconvenience, they have pieced together a fine looking lineup of local and national talent which will make for a family-friendly mid-summer classic.

Dr. Dog Fall Dates

In my opinion Dr. Dog is the best rock band of the past 10 years. Just figured I should come out and say it. Seriously, if you haven't checked out this band yet, you are missing out on their masterfully crafted studio albums as well as their inspired live shows which still seem to be performed to minuscule crowds considering their talent. I guess a stubborn fan like myself should relish the fact that I get to see such an awesome band in such intimate settings, yet it is almost a crime that not enough people still know about them. TO ALL OUT THERE: if you like the Beatles, yes the Beatles, you will most likely enjoy Dr. Dog. Anyway, they will set off on a fall tour this October, after appearing at the Life is Good festival at Blue Hills in Massachusetts.

Disco Biscuits Late Summer Tour

Now that Phish has returned to the jamband scene, the Disco Biscuits have proven that they can stand the test of time as they continue to grow in popularity. The past couple of years have seen Bisco headline Red Rocks for two straight summers and their annual festival, Camp Bisco, continues to boom. While their latest studio release was met with poor reviews, they continue to sell tickets because of their unique electronic approach to jam-rock. Those who love Bisco, love Bisco, but those who hate Bisco, love to make it heard how much they hate Bisco. If you fall in with the former, the following tour dates may appeal to you.

Disco Biscuits Dates:
08/25/10 Wed Bottle & Cork Dewey Beach, DE
08/26/10 Thu Lincoln Theatre Raleigh, NC
08/27/10 Fri Blackwater Music Festival @ Spirit of Suwannee Live Oak, FL
