The Shins' James Mercer and Danger Mouse Form Broken Bells

The Shins' frontman James Mercer and collaborative genius Danger Mouse have teamed up to form a new group called Broken Bells. The two first met face to face backstage at the 2004 Roskilde Festival in Copenhagen and decided to write some songs together. The two are planning to release their first self-titled full-length album on March 9th. Mercer will supply vocals, guitar, and bass, while Danger Mouse will be on drums, organ, synth, piano, and bass duties. Some songs will also feature a full string ensemble arranged by Daniele Luppi. Lets wait and see, Broken Bells could be 2010's Gnarls Barkley.

  1. fuck yeah, whens the last time that danger mouse came out with something boring and unoriginal...never

also, that comes out right before trarnes' (my dad) birthday. sounds like a perfect "here's a cd for you that i'd really like" gift

  2. Trarnes could totally get down to some Danger Mouse.

In honor of the season, here's one of The Bossman's favorite holiday tunes, "Santa Claus Go Straight to the Ghetto" off of James Brown's Funky Christmas album.

  3. they just released the first single called "the high road". you can listen to it on their myspace or download it by signing up for their email list on their website.

after one listen I have yet to make up my mind. Certainly more restrained than any of gnarls barkley's brasher stuff. I feel like they keep building up to what should be a shimmering crescendo of a chorus, but fall off right when i want it to really reach for something more

  4. I agree, its catchy enough to make me want to listen again and check out their other stuff when it comes out, but it definitely doesn't achieve the energy levels of Gnarls. I'm sure the last thing they want is to constantly be compared to GB, but when "Crazy" was at the top of just about every "Best of the 00's" rankings, you know Danger Mouse has a lot to prove.
